Applications of Slip Rings in Airports
Slip rings are integral to key airport operations—ranging from air traffic control (ATC) support and security screening to baggage handling and ground services—by establishing stable, reliable channels for power and signal transmission between rotating and stationary components. In ATC and weather radar systems, slip rings are critical to the rotating radar platform; as the antenna performs continuous 360-degree scanning, the slip ring ensures the reliable transfer of power and control signals from the stationary base to the antenna, while simultaneously relaying echo signals back to the ground processing system in real time. These radar slip rings often incorporate high-frequency signal paths, wide operating temperature ranges, and electromagnetic shielding to maintain stable communication amidst complex interference; poor contact could result in lost angular data or incomplete echo imagery, directly compromising the reliability of airspace monitoring. In security screening, CT scanners for carry-on and checked baggage utilize large-bore slip rings—with inner diameters reaching up to two meters—to provide continuous power to the rotating gantry and facilitate high-speed transmission of high-definition image data. Using either contact or non-contact transmission methods, these systems enable precise inspection of liquids and laptops without requiring passengers to open their luggage. Within baggage handling systems, hollow-shaft slip rings fit over the rotating main shafts of sorting conveyors, transmitting power, Ethernet, CAN bus, and control signals within a compact footprint; this supports the coordinated operation of tray-based sorting, barcode scanning, and RFID tracking, while dust- and vibration-resistant designs ensure reliability during 24/7 operations in baggage halls. Regarding ground service equipment, slip rings are employed in the cable management systems of aircraft ground power units (GPUs); a dual-slip-ring configuration facilitates the transition between the 400Hz power cable and the aircraft-side cable, as well as the connection between the connector signals and the main control unit, ensuring reliable cable winding and unwinding, reducing maintenance costs, and extending cable service life. Airport-grade slip rings must also meet rigorous standards—such as wide temperature tolerance, dust and moisture resistance, and long operational life—to withstand the demanding conditions of outdoor use and continuous, high-load operation.
